The Truth About Motivation
One of the most common questions I’m asked is “how do you stay motivated?”, and my answer probably isn’t what you think!
The truth is... I don’t “stay motivated”.. practically nobody stays motivated ALL the time. Motivation CAN be helpful to give you a boost when you set a new goal, but you can’t RELY on it to get you to the finish line 🏁
So if motivation doesn’t last, what DOES?
Discipline. Habits. The more you can make things “automatic” and just part of your routine (like working out, eating right, drinking enough water), the more likely it is that you’ll be able to “stay on track” towards your goal.
Eventually, the “hard” stuff like making it to the gym X days/week, getting enough protein in, pushing through your cardio, etc etc doesn’t necessarily get EASIER, but you get BETTER and therefore become more consistent.
I’m a huge fan of schedules, systems, and habits because those are the framework of your life, so to speak. If you can make health and fitness behaviors PART OF your framework, there’s no internal debate of “should I go to the gym today?” or “should I stick to my nutrition plan?”. It’s just WHAT YOU DO.
So if you’ve been struggling to reach certain goals, take a step back and look at how you’re setting up your “framework”. Are you setting yourself up for success? Are you making the RIGHT choice easy? How are you holding yourself accountable?
Odds are, something (or many things) in your “framework” could be improved. The more you can fine tune that stuff, the less you have to rely on fleeting motivation in order to get shit done!
